BHS System Brings Automated Sorting to the UK

Patented Technology is Center of Dry Recyclables System at New MRF

A state-of-the-art 20 tph dry recyclable sorting system designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has begun processing recyclables at the new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for SCA Recycling in Southampton, UK. The MRF processes consumer, commercial and industrial materials, recovering valuable commodities and diverting these materials from landfill.

The innovative BHS system for SCA Recycling expands the global paper company’s recycling operations beyond paper to include a wider range of recyclables including plastics, glass and metals. “Although trading conditions are challenging we believe that it is a good time for SCA Recycling to develop and expand,” says SCA Recycling director Steve Smith. “We are the first integrated paper group to go into the multi-material market and we hope to lead the drive for quality.”

The highly-automated facility raises the bar in environmental and technical standards, incorporating the latest in patented screening, optical, and air separation technologies to ensure high recovery and purity of recyclables at high throughput rates. The BHS design maximizes the recovery of marketable commodities, yielding minimal residual material and reducing disposal costs.

The BHS system focuses on the reduction of operating costs by optimizing integrated processes to emphasize mechanization and the extraction of recoverable materials on the “first pass.” As a result, the products produced by the system are high in quality, the cost to process material is low, and the capture rate of high value materials is excellent with extremely low residue values.

BHS Upgrades Friedman Recycling System

El Paso, TX – A new single stream recycling system, designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) is now operational at Friedman Recycling in El Paso, Texas with production rates already in excess of 25-30 tons per hour with extremely high recovery and purity rates. The BHS system, which replaced older 12 to 15 tph equipment at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), processes both residential and commercial recyclables.

“We are very pleased with our most recent expansion in El Paso, TX.” said Morris Friedman, President of Friedman Recycling Companies. “Although originally constructed less than three years ago, the incredible participation rates in the City of El Paso and our growth throughout West Texas and Southern New Mexico necessitated the doubling of our El Paso MRF.”

The innovative BHS system includes the patented BHS De-Inking Screen®, a screen exclusive to BHS that mechanically separates rigid cardboard and boxboard from newspaper, greatly increasing the purity of recovered paper grades and dramatically reducing the need for post sorting the newspaper stream. This latest innovation from BHS has reduced the post-sort staff to three people for this 25-30 tph system.

The recently redesigned BHS De-Inking Screen® is the first of its kind to be installed in North America. The patented screen has been sold exclusively in Europe since 2000; this installation marks the 17th worldwide.

BHS’s highly-automated design incorporates other state-of-the-art screening, optical, and air separation technologies, ensuring the highest possible recovery and purity of all recyclable commodities. This system was built to operate at the high production rates required of modern MRFs, balancing productivity and efficiency, yielding minimal residual material, reducing disposal costs and minimizing manual quality control.

BHS Signs North American Agreement for Unique Biogas System

US Company Has Exclusive Rights to Kompoferm® Anaerobic Digestion System

EUGENE, OR--Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), one of the leading and most innovative manufacturers of recycling processing equipment in the world, has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with the European company Eggersmann Anlagenbau to design and build high solids biogas facilities in North America. The Kompoferm® system utilizes a unique anaerobic digestion system that creates energy from organic waste.

The Kompoferm® system uses a dry fermentation process that is highly efficient, with low investment costs and high biogas yields. The system meets the growing demand for more economy and ecology in the burgeoning waste-to-energy industry, says BHS President Steve Miller, adding that the agreement is a perfect complement to BHS’ lineup of leading-edge recovery systems.

“As we continue to move forward in our efforts to extract more value out of the waste stream, we could not ignore the renewable energy potential available from the organic portion of solid waste,” Miller says. “The Kompoferm® system is the leading technology of its type in the world and enables BHS to provide its customers with systems that extract high-value recyclable materials from the waste stream, to make these systems energy neutral, and to provide additional renewable power to the communities where the waste is generated.”

Utilizing a well-controlled, biologically-stable, and proven design, the Kompoferm® percolate cycle ensures the production of biogas at a uniformly high level with low operating costs and energy requirements. The unique layout shortens the percolate path to a minimum and significantly reduces the area required for the system. Production is continuous, simple, reliable, safe and highly-automated.

BHS Dual-Line System Exceeds Capacity in UK Facility

The mixed recyclables sorting system at Casepak’s new $33 million Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Leicester, UK, has recently begun operation. As soon as its first week of operation, the system was exceeding design capacity by more than 20% while delivering high recovery rates and commodity purity. The facility is owned and operated by Casepak, a leading UK waste management company, and features a highly-automated, dual-function dry mixed recyclables sorting system designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS).

The facility began processing materials on September 12 and, due to the highly efficient and effective BHS design, Casepak is able to process material at rates significantly beyond the design capacity of 26 metric tons per hour. This high production rate is possible while still recovering well over 95% of the available commodities at extremely high purity levels. According to company officials, the new MRF more than doubles the quantity of material Casepak can handle and increases the number and type of materials processed.

“Our new MRF has been developed to meet the demands of changing collection systems at the same time ensuring we produce a quality end product,” says Kevin Thomas, Director – MRF Operations. “This is not a waste treatment facility – it’s a production process for essential materials and, as with any production process, quality is the key. Our system is based on a combination of robust screen and optical sorting technology to achieve the best possible quality output.”

According to Casepak officials, the new facility is the first in the UK to incorporate screening technology to recognize and separate the highly compacted plastic and metal food packaging found in household recycling collections.

BHS Begins Installation of 50-tph Single & Commercial Stream System

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has begun installing a 50-tph Single Stream and Commercial Fiber Sorting System for Republic Services at its Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Anaheim, California. The system, which is slated to be running by the end of the year, will be among the largest in North America and is part of the first phase of a $40 million investment by Republic to replace and upgrade the Anaheim facility.

The CVT Regional MRF is one of the largest facilities by volume in the United States and has served municipalities throughout Southern California for more than two decades, according to Republic officials. The 250,000-square foot facility is located on 35 acres and is the central processing center for waste and recyclables collected from numerous communities in Orange County. The company is investing $20 million in Phase 1 of the project, which got underway in August.

The new processing line is among the largest and most sophisticated single-stream system BHS has developed to date. According to Republic Services Area President Jim Ambroso, the state-of-the-art equipment will increase processing capacity, boost speed of operation, save energy and improve recovery. An education center also will be part of the phase one plans, giving visitors a first-hand look at the new recovery system.

“These improvements are the first, of a two-phased modernization project intended to further advance Republic’s mission to improve the environment and help its customers reach their sustainability goals,” said Ambroso. “The advanced technology will play a critical role in the management of solid waste and recyclables in Southern California.”

BHS wins Emerald Award for Growth

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) was recently awarded a prestigious Emerald Award by the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of the company’s dynamic growth and innovation.

“The Emerald Awards are important because they recognize the businesses that look beyond the bottom line to create a community in which our families can thrive, now and in the future,” says Dave Hauser, president of the Chamber.

Five businesses were awarded 2008 Emerald Awards “for outstanding contributions to the Eugene/Springfield area that contribute to its vitality and quality of life through sustainable business practices,” says Hauser. “Providing job opportunities, competitive wages and valuable goods and services..are all fundamental and necessary ingredients contributing to a vibrant and healthy local economy.”

It was noted that BHS is “not only keeping pace with the rest of its industry, but is the leader in supplying solutions for waste management and recycling as the market continues to grow and as businesses continue to be concerned with the crucial global impact of waste.

“The company is dedicated to meeting the ongoing challenges of a demanding industry and continues to grow and adapt to supply the worldwide recycling and waste markets with products and systems backed by innovation, experience, quality and service.”

“What we do here has relevance throughout the world,” says BHS President Steve Miller. “When every thing that’s put out in the waste stream is mixed together, it has no value but each thing, when separated from every other thing does has a value. That’s really what we do--take these waste streams and figure out how to separate all the commodities into discrete units so they have a value to someone else.”

Miller notes that the company, founded in 1976, currently has more than 150 employees.

Grand Opening for BHS System in the UK

SCA Recycling opens £15m Southampton MRF

Wednesday 14 October 2009 Waste Management News

Paper recovery specialist SCA Recycling officially opened a £15 million materials recycling facility in Southampton yesterday (October 13) - representing its first move into handling multi-material streams.

The facility, at Hounsdown Business Park in Totton, is designed to sort up to 200,000 tonnes-a-year of paper, plastics, metals and, importantly, glass, from both households and businesses.

SCA claim that it is the first MRF in the country to use optical sorting equipment produced by American firm NRT. These units use high-speed near infrared technology to identify and sort different types of plastics and have parallel detection and ejection points to capture as much material as possible.

State-of-the-art disc screen technology has also been supplied by Oregon-based manufacturer Bulk Handling Systems (BHS).

Conducting the opening ceremony, former 400m runner and Olympic silver medallist Roger Black said: "SCA Recycling's new MRF epitomises the efforts of the UK to improve the quality and quantity of recycling. Helping the South to recycle can only be a good thing!"

"What this means for the region is two-fold. Firstly the new facility will set new standards for recycling up and down the country, but equally important is the new jobs that the facility will create for the local community as such an important time," he added.

The 124,000 square foot building is capable of operating on a 24-hour, seven day a week basis and, after five weeks of operation, the MRF is already handling the equivalent of about 40,000 tonnes of material a year. It is hoped that up to 80 new jobs will eventually be created by the development.

BHS donates 12,825 pound of food

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) is pleased to announce that more than 6,000 lbs of non-perishable food was donated by its employees in a recent Thanksgiving Holiday week Food for Lane County food drive. The company matched that amount, for a total donation of 12,825 pounds of food given to the non-profit agency.

“We all feel fortunate that we are doing well as a company and our employees are prospering during a very difficult economic period.” BHS President Steve Miller told employees at the kick-off meeting for the food drive. “This community is going through a difficult time and when companies struggle, people struggle.”

Miller said the company, which recently won the Emerald Award for Growth from the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, wanted to “participate in a tangible way” in helping its community. The goal was to gather 700 pounds of food from employees, which the company pledged to match. “We’d love to double that amount through our matching program,” Miller said.

The company’s 150 employees responded to the challenge by meeting that initial goal nine times over.

“I’m so very proud to work for a company that takes an interest in its community,” said Jana Jenkins, the BHS employee who initiated and coordinated the food drive. “The employees at Bulk Handling Systems have been extremely generous in these difficult times.”

Food for Lane County supplies more than 6.5 million pounds of food per year to 120 different agencies that distribute to those in need throughout the year. The organization also runs food rescue and grocery rescue programs.

BHS is a global leader in the design, manufacturing and installation of material sorting and handling systems for the solid waste and recycling industry. It was founded in 1976 in Eugene, Oregon.

New BHS Single Stream System Installed at Wisconsin MRF

BHS has completed the installation of a state-of-the-art 25 tph single stream sorting system at the new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Outagamie County, Wisconsin. The MRF is a joint effort of three counties – Brown, Outagamie, and Winnebago – and was built to process material from the new single stream program developed by the three counties. The program is expected to generate greater volumes of recyclable materials and divert these materials from landfill.

The three county single stream program combines paper with plastic, glass and metal recyclables. Phil Stecker, Director of Solid Waste for Outagamie County, said the new MRF launches a new era of recycling for 500,000 people in more than 60 Brown-Outagamie-Winnebago communities. He hopes the new program will reduce complications for residents and encourage greater community participation in recycling.

The Outagamie County MRF sets the new standard for single stream processing, incorporating the latest in screening, optical, and air separation technologies. The BHS single stream system is designed to maximize the recovery of marketable commodities, yielding minimal residual material and reducing disposal costs. Designed, manufactured and installed by BHS, the system focuses on the reduction of operating costs by optimizing integrated processes to emphasize mechanization and the extraction of recoverable materials on the first “pass”. As a result, the products produced by the system are high in quality, the cost to process material is low, and the capture rate of high value materials is virtually 100% with extremely low residue values.

BHS MSW System Exceeds Expectations

BHS, working with GreenWaste Recovery of San Jose, recently marked the first anniversary of a highly successful dual line material recovery facility (MRF) by reporting a recovery rate of nearly 80 percent of the recyclables from the City of San Jose’s municipal solid waste (MSW) stream. The dual line system also efficiently processes single stream material in the same facility.

San Jose has long enjoyed a reputation as a recycling leader. The city’s landfill diversion rate of 62 percent is among the highest in the nation. However, with the city’s goal of achieving zero waste by 2022, it was clear to city officials that more would need to be done in pursuit of this target. GreenWaste Recovery worked closely with BHS to analyze the remaining recovery opportunities in the San Jose waste steam. “We routinely find that, even with outstanding curbside and commercial recycling programs that collect at the generation point, 40 to 50 percent of the remaining waste stream may still be recoverable,” says Eric Winkler, BHS Northwest Regional Sales Manager. “This number climbs to 80-plus percent if there is a desire to capture food waste.”

Midwest Fiber Opens New Single Stream Recycling Center

NORMAL, IL—Midwest Fiber Recycling will celebrate the grand opening of central Illinois’ first Single Stream recycling facility on September 16-17, inviting business partners and the public to tour its new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The plant features a 15-tph processing system designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems.

The 86,400-square-foot facility serves as a Single Stream recycling hub for all of central Illinois, serving more than 14 communities within a 100 mile radius, says Todd Shumaker, one of the owners of Midwest Fiber. The MRF began processing materials in late July and includes new offices and an older commercial processing operation. “It turned out really well,” Shumaker says.

The MRF is a major expansion and investment for the family-owned company, which began processing recyclables 21 years’ ago with two employees and a small plant in Decatur, Shumaker says. The company now has 75 employees and three recycling facilities —one in Peoria, one in Decatur and the new MRF in Normal.

The grand opening events feature a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, an Open House and a Community Shred Day along with refreshments, giveaways and tours.

Before choosing BHS to supply their system, company officials toured other facilities and carefully considered design proposals from other manufacturers, Shumaker says. “The design of the BHS system really met our needs,” he says. “We especially liked that it had a smaller footprint than other designs. And the equipment is manufactured in the US. That was important to us.”

The company configured the building to maximize use of the space and to fit the custom-designed processing equipment layout. “We spent a lot of time with BHS designing the system,” Shumaker said.

BHS Gives to New United Way Program

“United Road to Recovery” campaign targets needy families

BHS has made a significant contribution to a new campaign by the United Way of Lane County aimed at raising money for emergency assistance agencies that have been overwhelmed with the needs of families struggling financially during the current recession.

“We all feel fortunate that we are doing well as a company and our employees are prospering during a very difficult economic period,” said BHS President Steve Miller, announcing the company’s contribution to the United Road to Recovery program. “This community is going through a difficult time and when companies struggle, people struggle.” The company’s contribution is part of an ongoing effort at BHS to support local charities and programs.

United Way is hoping to raise $330,000 this year to distribute to groups and agencies that help needy children and their parents and providing emergency aid to the homeless. “Our hope is to help stabilize these families as they seek to rebuild their lives and return to independence,” United Way representatives said in a press release about the program.

The BHS contribution came through its affiliation with the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.

BHS was recently selected by Lane Metro Partnership to receive the Lane Council of Governments Regional Award of Merit for Economic Enhancement for 2009.

This award is given to successful Lane County businesses that demonstrate a commitment to the community, their employees, customers and industries, the partnership said.

BHS System Among Largest in North America

SAN CARLOS, CA--A 45 tph dual-line recycling system, designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), has begun processing recyclables at the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos, California. The new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is one of the largest municipally owned recovery center in North America.

“I’m very proud of the work done by our various teams in bringing this project to reality,” says Steve Miller, BHS CEO, adding that the system is “among the most technologically sophisticated in the world and places SBWMA at the forefront of recycling.”

The 25 tph single-line residential single stream system and the 20 tph commercial system incorporate the latest in patented screening, air and optical technologies to ensure maximum recovery and purity of recyclables at high throughput rates. The 70,200 square-foot facility is operated by South Bay Recycling and owned by South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), which represents 12 communities in San Mateo County. Company officials predict the new MRF will boost recycling in those communities by an additional 15% – 20%.

“BHS delivered,” says Hilary Gans, SBWMA Operations Contracts Manger. “The SBWMA updated its recycling program serving 500,000 residents to single stream recycling in 2011. We relied on BHS to design and manufacture a state-of-the-art system that would process large volumes of materials with high recovery.”

“I have been impressed by BHS’ professionalism and their ability to deliver on-time and on-budget,” Gans adds.
