Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has begun installing a 50-tph Single Stream and Commercial Fiber Sorting System for Republic Services at its Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Anaheim, California. The system, which is slated to be running by the end of the year, will be among the largest in North America and is part of the first phase of a $40 million investment by Republic to replace and upgrade the Anaheim facility.

The CVT Regional MRF is one of the largest facilities by volume in the United States and has served municipalities throughout Southern California for more than two decades, according to Republic officials. The 250,000-square foot facility is located on 35 acres and is the central processing center for waste and recyclables collected from numerous communities in Orange County. The company is investing $20 million in Phase 1 of the project, which got underway in August.

The new processing line is among the largest and most sophisticated single-stream system BHS has developed to date. According to Republic Services Area President Jim Ambroso, the state-of-the-art equipment will increase processing capacity, boost speed of operation, save energy and improve recovery. An education center also will be part of the phase one plans, giving visitors a first-hand look at the new recovery system.

“These improvements are the first, of a two-phased modernization project intended to further advance Republic’s mission to improve the environment and help its customers reach their sustainability goals,” said Ambroso. “The advanced technology will play a critical role in the management of solid waste and recyclables in Southern California.”

The high-capacity, low-labor system incorporates the latest in patented screening, air, optical and controls technology to maximize recovery and purity of valuable commodities and minimize waste. It features a dual processing front end, a glass clean up system and a combined optical container recovery line. The improvements are being made to comply with state diversion requirements and increasing population from communities served.

Phase2 of the improvements will replace and upgrade the facility’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) processing line and is scheduled for 2013.
